Build Your Brunch Menu
Pick a theme, add dishes, track ingredients and costs, then export or share.
Common Menu Planning Mistakes
- Ignoring seasonality. Ingredients out of season cost more and taste worse. Check what is actually available from your suppliers before locking a theme.
- Too many heavy dishes. A brunch menu with five egg-and-cheese plates and no fruit or greens feels unbalanced. Aim for a mix of light, medium, and indulgent options.
- Forgetting prep overlap. If three dishes need hollandaise and two need poached eggs, your kitchen can move faster. Look for shared components when building a menu.
- Pricing without cost data. Guessing a dish price without knowing ingredient costs is the fastest way to lose margin. Enter real costs even if they are rough estimates.
Seasonal Ingredient Swaps
These suggestions assume a temperate North American growing calendar. Adjust for your region.
| Season | Swap In | Swap Out |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | Asparagus, peas, ramps, strawberries | Winter squash, stored apples |
| Summer | Tomatoes, corn, zucchini, stone fruit | Brussels sprouts, citrus |
| Autumn | Mushrooms, squash, pears, cranberries | Berries, fresh basil |
| Winter | Citrus, root veg, kale, preserved fruits | Fresh tomatoes, tender greens |
Pricing Assumptions
The per-plate ingredient cost is calculated as quantity × unit cost for each ingredient line. The generator does not add labor, overhead, or waste factors. A common target food cost for brunch is 25–30% of the menu price. If your calculated food cost is above 35%, consider raising the per-plate price, reducing portion sizes, or swapping expensive ingredients.
Unit costs should reflect what you actually pay your supplier, not retail grocery prices. Round up to account for delivery fees and small fluctuations. For items sold by weight, enter the cost per ounce or per gram and the quantity in the same unit.
Troubleshooting
- Share link does not load a menu
- The URL may have been truncated. Long menus with many ingredients can exceed browser URL limits. Try saving to library instead and sharing the menu name so a colleague can rebuild it from the same theme preset.
- Food cost percentage looks wrong
- Check that every ingredient has a unit cost and quantity greater than zero. A missing cost entry counts as zero and skews the total downward.
- Print preview shows ingredient details
- The print stylesheet hides ingredient breakdowns by default. If you want a purchasing list instead of a customer menu, use the browser print dialog and toggle background graphics off to get a cleaner sheet.
Why This Generator Exists
Brunch is one of the most profitable dayparts for restaurants, but it is also one of the easiest to get wrong. A menu that looks good on a chalkboard can bleed money if nobody checked the numbers. This project started from conversations with cafe owners who wanted a quick way to test menu ideas before committing to supplier orders. It is not a replacement for a full cost-accounting system. It is a fast, visual scratchpad for the creative part of menu planning where you need to see the whole picture at once.
